Over the course of the past 6 years, CHS has grown and expanded the types of classes offered. Now, by popular demand, the school is taking a new direction.

Beginning in May of 2007 I will be taking students on an individual bases only. I will still accomodate 2 or 3 friends that want to "buddy up", but for the most part, it will be one-on-one. This is what my students tell me is most helpful to them. It will also allow for evening and mid-week instruction. Better yet, I will teach what the student dictates. The classes listed below are a sample, all or in part, of what is available. There is so much more! For now, please contact the shop to arrange class time and for current pricing. Thank you to all my friends and fellow designers, I look forward to much quality time together!   Until then, all the best!

2007 Individual Instruction Classes:

"Altered States"

This class was new last year, and was an instant hit! The class focuses on the re-design of commercial findings and beads to make your designs truly dazzling. Beginning metal-smithing is required for this class as we will be soldering some of the work. This is a great class that is chock full of exciting ideas to help turn your work into designer quality wearable art. You can expect your work to turn heads when you apply the tools and tricks that you will learn in this fast-paced workshop!

"BEZEL ME!"

Year after year this class continues to be a favorite with students of all skill levels. Learn to make a bezel, set a stone, and finish a beautiful pendant or cuff bracelet. Expand your jewelry vocabulary and take your talent to a whole new level. The first step in jewelry design is an understanding of how components work together to produce a wonderful finished piece.
This is a beginning-intermediate silver smithing class. A stone to set is required for this class.

"BY DESIGN"

Learn the basics of good 3-dimensional design. Make a pattern, learn to choose between balance and symmetry, and why each is appropriate to your design goal. Learn the magic of color mixing for optimum punch. Explore the unique correlation between sound and color. Make an 8 point color wheel and learn to apply principles of light and perspective to your designs. Beyond the average to truly unique. It's all, "BY DESIGN".

"Clasped Clasps"

Learn to make a sterling silver box clasp and a designer toggle that will work for multi-strand designs. These beautiful clasps are lovely as off-set designer elements worn at the front of the necklace as well at the back of the neck. This is a fast paced silversmithing class with a focus on fabulous finishes. Plan to embelish your design with bezel set stones for added impact. If custom findings matter to you, this class is a must have!

"Cold Connections!"

This class is designed especially for the jewelry designer that is frustrated with the standardized look of readily available commercial findings, but, without a soldering background, is limited to wire worked clasps, etc. This class will open a whole new world of design possibilities! This is an informative and exciting class with a focus on tools and technique for both the beginner, and experienced designer. In this class you will make a clasp and center-piece pendant for a unique and unified look.

"Finding Findings"

This class is new this year, and is being offered because so many of you have asked for this type of class. It will focus on the re-design of commercial findings and beads to make your designs truly dazzling. Beginning silversmithing is required for this class as we will be soldering some of the work. This is a great class full of new and exciting ideas of ways to turn your work into great designer pieces. You can expect your work to turn heads when you start to apply the tricks and tools you learn in this class!

"Lapidary Lessons"

Over the past 10 years, there seems to have been a renaissance in the field of lapidary. More and more people want to work stone, and those that are already cutting want to break out of the mold and try new things. If this describes you, then we have just the class for you! Here you will learn the basics of good design, calibration, how to cut a cabochon correctly, lamination, bead making, stone orientation, and more. If you have ever wanted to work with stone, now is your chance to learn!

"Nifty Knots & Straight Stringing"

Over and over again I have been asked to do a class on knotting, both decorative and functional. Well, here it is! This class is a lot of fun, and just to be sure, I have designed a twist for this one-day class. Learn the importance of balance when doing multiple-strand necklaces, what material is best for which length of necklace, and how to guarantee that the final result will indeed be what you had in mind! Time constraints require large beads for this project. BYOB!

"PMC and Beyond"

Designed at the request of some of our students, this class will take you into and beyond the world of metal clay. This material has not truly been exploited to anywhere near its potential, probably due to its cost. This class will get you thinking about new applications for this interesting product. Beginning sculpture, mold making, casting, soldering, stone setting, so many disciplines will be initiated in this workshop.

"WIND IT UP BABY!"

Here is another favorite class for the advanced or intermediate beader. This class introduces the student to forging and silver smithing, while focusing on wire-wrapping and assembly. The project for this workshop is a fabulous fringe bracelet that is sure to inspire and excite! You will make everything from the link bracelet and clasp to the wonderful fringe dangles.

CUSTOM HOUSE SCHOOL of LAPIDARY AND JEWELRY DESIGN is pleased to have the opportunity to welcome you to this unique learning center. I hope you enjoy the time you spend at CHS, and will plan to attend one or more of the workshops offered. I look forward to seeing you!  Until then,
All the best,
